Welcome Week: Wesleyan Wiffleball 8/21/2003 4 pm Kay Quad Fellowship (FR)
Our first welcome week activity. In 2002, the campus ministry had about $50 in its checking account and not a lot of money to sponsor welcome week activities. In an effort to have a welcome week presence, we planned pickup sports and snacks on the quad in front of Kay. Due to relatively late planning of the event, we were not able to get much publicity, and practically none in official Welcome Week publications. In successive years, we would have a much more vigorous Welcome Week presence.

Alternative Spring Break 3/6/2004 7:20 Cherokee, North Carolina Justice (FS)
Work service trip to Cherokee Nation, North Carolina. Participants traveled in rented vans to Cherokee, NC on Saturday, March 6, 2004. We stayed in a converted day care center at Cherokee UMC. We worked at Cherokee Challenge, a center for Cherokee youth to develop leadership and teambuilding. (5 participants, including the chaplain, contracted poison ivy). We met with members of the community, were served Indian Tacos, participated in a sweat lodge ritual, and did sightseeing and other trips around town (including a hike to Mingo Falls). We returned on Friday, March 12, 2004 This was our first attempt at an alternative spring break. We had two aims: to serve an underserved community domestically, and to provide an inexpensive alt. break trip to the AU Community (cost is $200). The trip was a great success and generated a lot of positive word of mouth for subsequent trips.

Alternative Spring Break: Work Service 3/8/2004 8:15 Cherokee, North Carolina Justice (FS)
We worked at Cherokee Challenge, a center for Cherokee youth designed to give them teambuilding and leadership skills, to keep them off drugs and alcohol. We had been told we would be doing light construction, but they were unprepared for us and instead we wound up clearing campsites on the hillside. Because we were unprepared for this work, we did not have all the tools and clothing we needed. A number of us would contract poison ivy (including me).
Alternative Spring Break: Work Service 3/9/2004 8:45 Cherokee, North Carolina Justice (FS)
Continued work at Cherokee Challenge. In the evening, Mark Grant, Dinah s husband prepared Indian Tacos for us. Following dinner, Amy Walker (Mark s mother) spoke to us about traditional Native American spirituality

Alternative Spring Break: Work Service 3/10/2004 8 Cherokee, North Carolina Justice (FS)
Continued work at Cherokee Challenge. In the morning, we had to drive one of the participants to the clinic for treatment of his poison ivy. In the evening, we attended a sweat lodge ritual at the home of Curtis and Mary Ki Kekahbah. The sweat lodge experience was incredible and many students reported it to be the highlight of the trip. We were unprepared regarding food following the sweat and had to rely on whatever leftovers Curtis and Mary had. We would not repeat this mistake in subsequent years.
Alternative Spring Break: Free Day 3/11/2004 10:45 Cherokee, North Carolina Fellowship (FR)
Devotion (FD)

We traveled downtown to the Museum of the Cherokee Indian to see the exhibit and then had free time in town, shopping and sightseeing till about 5 pm. Innovation: The Other Six Days 4/8/2004

Justice (FS)
In an effort to make the connection between Christian faith and social action clearer, we created a program entitled The Other Six Days , referring to our belief that what you do on Sunday ought to have something to do with the other six days. Each month of the school year will devoted to an issue that intersects with Christian responsibility. In that month there will be an education opportunity, a service opportunity, and a worship service devoted to the topic. The idea was developed at a special meeting in April of the UMSA devoted to planning for the coming year.

Innovation: Student Preachers at Healing Service 9/5/2004

Worship (FC)
In the days of the old Protestant Community, there were often student speakers who were part of the regular worship. This had been done to create involvement but also because many of the students preferred listening to one of their own rather than a chaplain. That practice had fallen off by the end of 2002 and was not made a regular part of the reconstituted United Methodist-Protestant Community. However, we decided to offer the opportunity to students to preach at the healing service starting in the fall of 2004.

The bus was well worth the cost. (Orioles 14, Yankees 8)

Hospitality (FSh)

A number of groups have week-long informational events: Discover Islam week, Palestinian Awareness Week, the Jewish Festival of Sukkoth, etc. It was decided that there was no reason the UM Community could not hold a week-long program of events and activities on the quad to highlight the United Methodist Heritage of American University and as a way to promote our community and activities. When arrangements for a large tent from the conference fell through, we purchased three 10 x 10 tents that we linked together in varying arrangements throughout the week where our information was displayed and activities took place. Food and drink were also provided to visitors free of charge. Much of the programming was thrown together ad hoc, since the chaplain came up with the idea only in late August. It was a successful first run and in successive years promises to be even better.
Feed the Quad 9/13/2005 11 Main Quad Hospitality (FSh)
Our annual good will free picnic and cookout was held on the main quad as our main hospitality event of the fall. We gave out 200 hamburgers, 96 veggie burgers, 96 hot dogs, and an array of snacks and soft drinks. In 2005, this event took place as part of Methodist Heritage Week. Because of University risk-management rules, the event is categorized as a private event, prohibiting us from advertising to the campus at large. Promotion was done within the UM-Protestant community and by word of mouth. And of course, once the grills are lit, people always show up.

The chaplain dressed in colonial era garb and distributed information on those who rode circuit. As with the demonstration of Wesley s preaching, the chaplain had a fuller understanding of what it meant to be a fool for Christ . Because of red tape, we were unable to obtain a horse, but we are dedicated to trying again in 2006.

In the fall 2005 semester, University President Dr. Benjamin Ladner was suspended pending an investigation into misappropriation of funds. At the initiative of UMSA President Lindsey Triplett, the UM Community organized student responses to the crisis and provided the e-mail contacts of Bishop John Schol and GBHEM General Secretary Jerome King del Pino, both ex officio members of the Board of Trustees. Because of Bishop Schol s dedication and conscientious response, the UM community rose to some prominence within the broader AU community as one that was taking every step to use AU s church affiliation to benefit the needs of students and faculty.

Sunday is the day of the trip when we acclimatize to our surroundings. We attended worship services at Cherokee UMC, drove to Mingo Falls for a hike, and attended a sweat lodge ritual at the home of Curtis and Mary Ki Kekahbah, followed by a potluck dinner there. The day was packed with spiritual lessons starting with a love-based evangelical message from Rev. Phillippi and concluding with the sweat under the leadership of Curtis. We had never had the sweat the first day in Cherokee, usually on the Wednesday. This however, became a bonding experience for the group and set the tone for a week of fellowship.

Justice (FS)

The UM-Protestant Community, in partnership with the Kay Interfaith Council planned a day long vigil in memory of the victims of the Virginia Tech massacre. A memorial was set up on the Kay steps and members of the AU community were invited to bring or write letters of support or to just sit in reflection. An interfaith service was held in the chapel at 10:45pm. This vigil was held in large measure because the only vigil held prior to that was the one the night of and it was decidedly not interfaith in nature, being an explicitly Catholic office for the dead. UM students wanted to fashion a memorial that was more inclusive of AU s diverse population. The lower attendance was due to the week s time that had passed. Kay Interfaith Council
